In a speech on his judicial philosophy delivered Tuesday in a chapel at North Carolina's Wake Forest University, Sen. John McCain sought to burnish his conservative credentials with a broadside against "the common and systematic abuse of our federal courts by the people we entrust with judicial power" and a promise of "better judges" in the mold of Supreme Court justices John G. Roberts and Samuel Alito. | 8A.

ONLINE Iran cancels Iraq security talks with Iran called off further Iraq security talks with Washington until U.S. forces stop their crackdown on Shiite militias, but the military brought more air power into the fight Monday and escalated its accusations of Iranian backing for extremists.

The latest flare-up has put Iraq's government in a bind as it seeks to stamp out armed Shiite gangs but worries about angering Shiite heavyweight Iran, which has close ties to the core of Iraq's political leadership.

Washington has long accused Iran of arming and training some Shiite militia factions. The accusations were sharpened Monday as the military said detainees described being trained at bases outside Tehran by militants from Hezbollah, an Iranian-aided faction based in Lebanon. LOTTERIES South

Earth Day ROCKS! - Open to the public
Day/Time: Tuesday, April 22; 5:00-7:00 pm
“Go Green”! This national phenomenon has hit and we are celebrating our Mother Earth in beautiful McLean Park. Jam to live music by the up and coming South Florida band called “The Drive Home”. TDH has been named the #1 band on MTVU’s Best Music on Campus, toured with Howie D from the Backstreet boys and won the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands. This fresh, clean and positive young band plays infectious melodies that will keep you entertained while you stroll through the ‘green’ vendors scattered around the park.
A children’s area offers an opportunity to plant flowers in a take home flowerpot, color murals, receive temporary tattoos and learn about earth-friendly practices.

Bring any brand of old athletic shoes (no shoes containing metal, cleats, dress shoes and no wet or damp shoe) to recycle through Nike’s “Let Me Play” program. www.letmeplay.com/reuseashoe

Come and enjoy an evening of fun at McLean Park, you might learn something! Bring a lawn chair, blanket and non-alcoholic beverages. Free food for the first 300 individuals will be provided by the North Strand Optimist Club.
Choose to make a difference! It begins in North Myrtle Beach!
